Wold Newton Foundation School

Aim, Aspire, Achieve

PSHE and RSHE

Intent

At Wold Newton Foundation School, we are extremely ambitious for our children and have high expectations for their behaviour, personal development and wellbeing. Our aim is to deliver a PSHCE and RSHE curriculum that is accessible to all pupils and ensures that every child knows more, remembers more and understands more about how to play a positive, safe and successful role in society—both now and in the future.

We want pupils to develop a secure understanding of their world locally, nationally and globally, and to feel confident tackling the moral, social and cultural issues they will encounter as they grow. Through our curriculum, children learn about rights and responsibilities, diversity, equality and what it means to be an active, respectful member of a community. We also encourage pupils to develop their sense of self‑worth by contributing positively to school life and the wider community.

We follow the One Decision scheme, which provides a clear, progressive structure for teaching personal, social, health and emotional development. Our intent is to help pupils:

  • Build confidence, resilience and emotional literacy

  • Form healthy, respectful relationships

  • Stay safe online and offline

  • Make informed choices about health and wellbeing

  • Understand and value diversity

  • Develop independence, responsibility and a strong sense of identity

Our curriculum supports children to become thoughtful, respectful and responsible citizens who are well prepared for the next stage of their lives.

Implementation

At Wold Newton, we recognise that every child is unique. Our commitment to valuing individuality is reflected in our Investor in Pupils award, which celebrates children’s strengths, interests and contributions. We actively foster learning behaviours and experiences that build character, helping pupils become resilient, creative, supportive and tolerant individuals who understand how to be respectful members of a community.

To reflect the needs of our school community, we have identified six core values that we aim to develop in all pupils:

  • Morals

  • Individual Liberty

  • Understanding of Faiths and Cultures

  • Mutual Respect

  • Aspiration

  • Healthy and Safe Choices

Alongside these, each term we focus on a key learning behaviour:

  • Autumn: Cooperation

  • Spring: Resilience

  • Summer: Confidence and Independence

PSHCE and RSHE are taught through:

  • Weekly discrete lessons using the One Decision scheme

  • Whole‑school assemblies

  • Cross‑curricular links with subjects such as RE, Computing and Geography

  • Real‑life experiences, roles and responsibilities within school

  • Visits and workshops from external agencies

Visitors such as careers advisers, emergency services, the NSPCC and the Local Authority’s Pedestrian Skills programme help pupils learn how to stay safe and make responsible choices. We take pupil wellbeing seriously and use whole‑school strategies to monitor and support emotional health, taking action where needed.

This combination of structured lessons, real‑life experiences and whole‑school culture ensures that PSHCE and RSHE are embedded throughout daily school life.

Impact

By the end of each key stage, pupils will know more, understand more and be able to do more in PSHCE and RSHE. They will demonstrate confidence, empathy and the ability to make safe, informed and respectful choices. Pupils will be able to talk about their feelings, build positive relationships and show respect for others, reflecting the values we promote as a school.

We see the impact of our curriculum through:

  • Pupils’ behaviour and attitudes

  • Their engagement in discussions and activities

  • Their ability to apply learning in real‑life situations

  • Their contributions to school and community life

  • Ongoing assessment in line with school policy

Our approach ensures that pupils leave Wold Newton as confident, responsible and thoughtful young people who are well prepared for the challenges and opportunities of modern life.
