Writing
At Wold Newton we encourage writing form nursery onwards beginning with mark making progressing to Year 6 who produce high quality work across a variety of genres. We encourage pupils to enjoy developing and expanding their vocabulary by using high quality texts to model writing on. We have a structured approach to the genres taught to ensure all varieties are covered over a two year rolling programme; there is a different focus for each half term which all classes adopt, immersing themselves in the particular genre and allowing us to see progression throughout the school and allow moderation across year groups.
Pupils are taught to identify key features of texts developing a success criteria for their own work with grammar sessions linked to the genre focused on each half term. Spellings are also taken from this text with words supplemented by the statutory lists set by the government. Pupils develop their writing each half term through a variety of modelled writing sessions, group and independent work, peer and adult led marking and editing. This then culminates in an assessed piece of writing.
Writing is assessed against the schools I can statements or for Years 2, 5 and 6 against statutory requirements.

We also encourage pupils to write for a purpose. Class 2 recently wrote some brilliant persuasive letters to local businesses and we have been overwhelmed by the responses received. We now have a new bird bath, feeders and food from B and Q in Bridlington, a bench from West BS, a bespoke planter from Flixton Sawmill and pots and plants from Reighton garden centre!
