Foundational Knowledge at Wold Newton Foundation School

Building Strong Foundations for Lifelong Learning

At Wold Newton Foundation School, we believe that a secure foundation of knowledge is essential for every child to thrive, both now and in the future. Foundational knowledge provides the building blocks upon which all future learning is developed. By ensuring pupils acquire, remember and confidently apply core knowledge and skills, we enable them to access increasingly complex learning as they move through the curriculum.

We recognise that children cannot think critically about concepts they have not first learned. Therefore, our curriculum is carefully designed to identify the essential knowledge, vocabulary and skills that pupils need to know and remember. Learning is sequenced so that new knowledge builds upon prior learning, helping pupils make meaningful connections across subjects and develop a deep understanding over time.

A Curriculum That Builds Knowledge Over Time

Our curriculum is structured to support long-term learning rather than short-term performance. Key knowledge is clearly identified within each subject and revisited regularly through retrieval practice, discussion, application and assessment. This enables pupils to strengthen their understanding, commit learning to long-term memory and develop confidence in using what they know.

We place particular emphasis on:

  • Developing rich vocabulary and language acquisition.
  • Reading fluency, comprehension and a love of reading.
  • Number sense, arithmetic fluency and mathematical reasoning.
  • Retrieval and recall of previously taught knowledge.
  • Building strong connections between new and existing learning.
  • Developing automaticity in essential knowledge and skills.
  • Ensuring knowledge is retained and applied across different contexts.

By securing these foundations, pupils are better equipped to engage with more challenging concepts, think critically and achieve success across the curriculum.

High Expectations for Every Child

We firmly believe that all pupils can achieve when provided with appropriate support, challenge and opportunities to succeed. Our curriculum is ambitious for every learner, including pupils with SEND and those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Teachers use assessment thoughtfully to identify gaps in understanding and provide timely support. Through adaptive teaching, targeted interventions and high-quality classroom practice, we ensure that all children can access and build upon the foundational knowledge they need to be successful.

Knowledge, Skills and Understanding

Whilst knowledge is at the heart of our curriculum, we recognise that it must be used and applied meaningfully. As pupils develop secure foundational knowledge, they learn how to use it creatively, solve problems, ask questions and think critically.

Across all subjects, pupils are encouraged to:

  • Remember key knowledge accurately.
  • Apply their learning in a range of contexts.
  • Explain their thinking using subject-specific vocabulary.
  • Make connections between different areas of learning.
  • Develop curiosity, resilience and independence.
  • Build confidence as successful learners.

Our curriculum ensures that knowledge and skills are carefully sequenced so that pupils know more, remember more and can do more as they progress through school.

Preparing Children for the Future

Foundational knowledge is not simply about what children know today; it is about preparing them for what they will learn tomorrow. By building strong foundations from the earliest years onwards, we ensure our pupils are equipped to access the next stage of their education and become confident, lifelong learners.

We want every child to leave Wold Newton Foundation School with a rich body of knowledge, strong literacy and numeracy skills, and the confidence to embrace future challenges and opportunities.

Foundational Knowledge in English and Mathematics

At Wold Newton Foundation School, we recognise that English and Mathematics provide the foundations for learning across the entire curriculum. We place a strong emphasis on developing reading, writing, spoken language, vocabulary, number fluency and mathematical understanding from the earliest stages of education.

Our carefully sequenced curriculum ensures that pupils build secure foundations over time, enabling them to recall key knowledge, apply learning with confidence and achieve greater depth of understanding. Through regular practice, retrieval opportunities and carefully planned progression, pupils develop the essential knowledge and skills needed for success both within school and beyond.

Further information about how foundational knowledge is planned, taught and assessed within these core subjects can be found on our English and Mathematics curriculum pages.

“The more pupils know and remember, the more they are able to learn.”

This principle underpins our approach to curriculum design and reflects our commitment to providing an education that enables every child to flourish, leaving Wold Newton Foundation School with the knowledge, skills and confidence needed for the next stage of their education and beyond.
